Our Story
This property was an apple orchard from just after World War 1 until 2001.
Growing a variety of apples including Cox’s Orange; Gravenstein; Granny’s Smith, Braeburn (the Braeburn variety was originally founded just over the Estuary), to name a few; pears & stone fruit.
After 2001 the property was subdivided and the growing diversified to Olives, which are still grown on some of the family land today.
Helme Orchard was the name of the orchard and we have continued to use this today as Helme Holiday.
The baches, as we call them, were originally workers accommodation in the harvest season & holiday accommodation in the summer months. Even the campsites followed this trait and in addition included camping on the edge of the orchard and around the Batches and paddock.
This is a working property, Helme Horticultural (horticultural contracting) is run from here and we have animals therefore have electric fences. Please be aware that you are responsible for your children whilst here.
See our map on this website which indicates the accommodation versus the rest of our working property, so it’s nice and clear where you can & can’t go. The beach is directly over the road, one swimming pool we can’t do anything about, so please keep a very close eye on those precious little ones!
In summer this is holiday accommodation, however in the other seasons we welcome a mixture of holiday makers and enquires for people looking for short-term accommodation facilities. We welcome people staying whilst their house is being built, the author wanting to write the next book in a cosy bach by the sea or those utilising medical facilities (Mapua is only 10 minutes away).
A maximum stay of 6 months applies to the accommodation.
We are a family run property and from 01st April 2017 the next generation (third generation) have stepped up to look after you. Chris, Amanda & their daughter Elizabeth are your hosts.
